Top Tips for Storing Christmas Decorations

Categories

Christmas is coming around yet again and before you know it, you’ll be rifling through your never-ending stock of tree ornaments only to find some broken or without hooks at the bottom of the box.

To put an end to this costly expense, below are some tips to help you keep your decorations organised and in good condition so you can enjoy them for many Christmases to come.

1. Label each box with the year and contents

As everyone knows, unpacking your Christmas decorations can be a daunting task. Even if you take the time to label each box with its contents, it can be difficult to remember what was packed where. To make the process easier, try labeling each box with the year as well as its contents.

2. Store decorations in a cool, dry place

Once the holidays are over and it’s time to take down the tree and all the decorations, it’s important to store them properly if you want them to last until next year. Heat and humidity can cause damage, so it’s best to find a cool, dry place to keep them.

A basement or crawl space is ideal, as long as there’s no risk of flooding. If you don’t have access to a basement, then a closet or attic will work as long as it doesn’t get too hot or humid in there.

3. Wrap fragile ornaments in tissue paper and bubble wrap

If you want to keep your Christmas decorations safe and sound, it’s important to pack them up properly. Fragile ornaments should be wrapped in tissue paper or bubble wrap to prevent them from breaking.

Once they’re wrapped, place them gently in a box or storage container, filling any empty spaces with crumpled tissue paper to help keep the items from shifting during transit. Label the box “fragile” so that you’ll remember to handle it with care.

4. Keep cords untangled and organised

Anyone who has ever tried to untangle a mass of Christmas tree lights knows what a frustrating task it can be.

Fortunately, there are a few simple steps that can be taken to keep cords untangled and organised. One way to do this is to use cord wraps or zip ties to secure cords together, which not only prevents them from becoming tangled, but also makes it easy to grab the entire bundle when you need it.

By taking a few minutes to wrap up cords and store them in a safe place, you can save yourself a lot of time and frustration next festive season.

5. Use zip-top bags to store lights and other small items

Zip-top bags are an inexpensive and easy way to organise small items like Christmas lights and tree decorations. Simply place the items in the bag, seal it shut, and label it with the contents and date. This will help you find them quickly and easily when you need them.

What’s more, because zip-top bags are clear, you can see what’s inside without having to open them up. So next time you’re looking for an easy way to organise your Christmas decorations, reach for a zip-top bag.
