Storing your outdoor furniture during the winter months can help to increase its life expectancy and ensure it is protected and in tip-top condition for the spring!
As many of us have spent a lot more time at home and making the most of our gardens this year, our outdoor furniture may have remained in use much further into winter than usual. Now, as the cold chill well and truly sets in and we begin to prepare for winter celebrations, we may have to finally accept the weather and put the outdoor garden furniture into storage units.
However, cramming your chairs and table into your shed or garage may not be the answer, take a look at our guide on how to store outdoor furniture in the winter.
Scrub wooden furniture down with hot soapy water and a stiff brush to avoid fungal spores and lichen gathering in storage. Make sure it is dry before covering it in a heavy tarpaulin and placing it in your shed, garage or storage unit. If not, it may fall victim to rot.
Any soft cushions or parasols should be kept indoors rather than an outdoor shed space or garage, as they can become mouldy or make a home for mice and other creatures seeking warmth.
Mildew can often cause plastic garden furniture to discolour so it’s important to keep it dry and well ventilated. Use a soft cloth and hot soapy water to wash your plastic furniture down before storing it away or covering it.
Wicker garden furniture can prove difficult to clean, but we recommend you remove any dust with a vacuum before scrubbing it with hot, soapy water and a toothbrush for the hard to reach areas. Make sure to store your wicker furniture inside in a dry place over the winter months. You could also consider varnishing it to increase its lifespan.
Iron garden furniture can rust easily if not properly protected and stored. If you spot any rust, try applying a rust removal product or use a soft rag to soak it in white vinegar before rubbing it with aluminium foil. For best results, remember to clean the furniture and ensure it is dry before storage.
