Declutter and show house buyers the good side of your home

Take a look at our top decluttering tips, increase your curb appeal and get your home ready for the market. If you are planning to sell your home, or if you want to fall in love with your space again, now is the time to put in a little effort.

Whether that’s a really good spring clean, or part one of packing, Incredible Bulk Storage offers some great tips to get your home ready for a quick sale!

1. Keep Decluttering Simple

Often, the most difficult part of the decluttering process is starting. That’s why it is a good idea to keep your declutter approach simple at first. Start decluttering by clearing off your coffee table or kitchen worktop and committing to keeping all counters clutter free, pulling everything out of a drawer, and organising or tackling your laundry room or home office space.

However you start to declutter, try to only sort one room or one space at a time so that you can keep the process simple and stay organised. Just make sure you stick to your decluttering and organising rule when you have house viewings so that your home makes good first impressions. Too much clutter can make a room feel smaller and cramped and also may catch the eye of your viewers more than the potential of the room and wall space.

Cleaning worktops and surfaces will help impress the potential buyers.

2. Schedule a decluttering weekend

It is so easy to put things off, especially huge tasks like decluttering and the dreaded ‘bin or keep’ pile. Busy weekends, family time and just wanting a rest is all ok, and you shouldn’t feel guilty about having them. Instead, plan for a decluttering weekend. Schedule the time out in advance, make sure you don’t make any plans and either arrange babysitters for the children or research ways in which you can get them involved.

So, get the boxes, bin bags and other packing supplies. Book your storage unit ready to store your belongings and plan your trips to the tip. If you have all the elements in place, you will look forward to the task of decluttering and getting ready to move home, rather than dreading it and even putting it off altogether.

If you’re likely going to be using your downstairs or living rooms all week, then start with other rooms such as the spare bedroom or bathroom. If you’re having regular viewings, you may want to schedule a weekend of decluttering and organising on a semi-regular basis.

3. Don’t forget to declutter your storage spaces

Remember that house viewers have complete free reign when it comes to opening cupboards, kitchen cabinets, under stair storage areas and fitted wardrobes – even your fridge and freezer could be targeted, especially if they are integrated appliances. These areas are normally our clutter haven; we throw stuff in and shut the door with a huge sigh of relief.

Sadly, you can’t avoid decluttering your storage spaces, as you need potential buyers to see the storage spaces in your home, and how to make good use of them. Your viewers may want to check on the central heating system during their visit, so it’s no use piling all of your unwanted items into the boiler or laundry room!

4. The Decluttering Formula

Decluttering for a house move is hard, but if you start at the point of putting your house up for sale, the process will be much easier in the long run. Take a look at our declutter formula which will help you to decide whether to keep it, store it, or throw it away!

The formula allows you to mentally prepare for moving home and steadily work through your belongings and organise your items into three piles or boxes. If you find it hard to let personal items go or just don’t know where to begin the process, ask a family member or friend to help you.

Your ‘keep items’ should be placed in their correct space or tidied away. You’ll then need to work through your ‘throw items’ deciding whether you’re going to give some items to charity (e.g. donate clothes), sell them online, or get rid at the local tip. Your ‘maybe’ pile can remain in storage, either at home or consider self-storage at Incredible Bulk. You may want to revisit the items after six months, or after the move and go through the ‘throw’, ‘keep’, and ‘maybe’ process again.

Our personal storage units, ranging from small storage lockers to 250sqft, are ideal for storing household items, furniture,  personal possessions and other items. We’re conveniently located at Unit 9A, Whetley Mills, Thornton Road, Bradford, BD8 8LQ and benefit from easy access. Use boxes or create a list of items set for the bin, storage or home.

5. Step up your garden game

Not all of us are keen gardeners or have the time to embrace our inner Alan Titchmarsh, but a desirable outdoor space can be the pathway to house selling success.

Another decluttering tip is to remove any rubbish, store away all the children’s toys, throw away the mouldy, sun-bleached or greying furniture and get a grip on the overgrown plants.

It’s amazing how quickly a freshly cut lawn, swept up patio and a leaf free drive can change the appearance of your home and boost curb appeal. Imagine how much better it can be with a few potted plants added in too? Painting your front door a bright and welcoming colour may also give the exterior of your home a new, fresh look.

6. Lighten Up

Light and airy rooms naturally lift your mood, so make sure that you make the most of this when selling your home. Remove busy and large items from window sills, such as vases, ornaments and picture frames. They can always go into storage ready for the big move, and that’s already one box packed up and ready to go.

You don’t need to be an interior designer or a professional organizer to prepare your property for a quick sale. Keeping the curtains tied, blinds up and windows open, will also lighten up and transform the feel of a room instantly.
